West Campus Planning Underway

Planning funds for the west campus research building are part of the UW’s long-term vision for innovation and growth.

Amid a state budget season dominated by major investments — such as hundreds of millions of dollars for necessary infrastructure updates and funding to attract and retain top talent — one quieter but significant item also made the list: $19.65 million for the planning and design of the west campus research building.

Slated for the site of the former Biotron Laboratory, the project will establish a new research facility aimed at strengthening collaboration between university researchers and private industry. An adjoining 550-stall parking ramp is also part of the plan to support accessibility and future growth. According to the university, the facility will help “further [UW–Madison’s] connection between research and basic science to commercial application.

The west campus research building is one step in the broader West Campus District Plan — a long-term redevelopment vision for the area along Observatory Drive, between the Bakke Recreation & Wellbeing Center and the School of Pharmacy. The district is envisioned as a vibrant, mixed-use hub that will “improve research, teaching, learning, health care, industry, and community connections.”

The full transformation is expected to unfold over the next 30 years, and current concept maps outline plans for four phases of development. These include:

  • Phase 1: Replacing the Biotron facility with collaborative research and office space
  • Phase 2: Relocating the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and renovating the WARF building
  • Phase 3: Relocating McClimon Track and Soccer complex on campus and adding research offices, labs, and residential space
  • Phase 4: Replacing Lot 60 with a new athletics complex and adding residential and hotel space

A planning phase will help define the building’s purpose, scope, and design—laying the foundation for a future that supports interdisciplinary research, innovation, and community engagement.
