The UW Marching Band’s annual spring concert is officially 50 years old — but it certainly doesn’t act its age. First held in 1975 and led by legendary former band director Mike Leckrone, the Varsity Band Concert was meant to give the band one last chance to get together and have fun playing their favorite pieces before the schoolyear ends. While Leckrone assumed the concert would only interest the band itself, family, friends, and fans quickly high-stepped to Mills Concert Hall for the chance to see something different from football Saturdays at Camp Randall. Over the decades, the concert picked up beloved traditions, including unforgettable entrances, outrageous skits, and the sentimental sheet music toss that closes out each performance. Now held each April as the grand finale of the band season, the concert trades the usual precision of game day for pure showmanship, giving band members room to play, joke, and connect with the audience in ways the stadium doesn’t allow.
