Death of Dr. Robert Charles Gesteland on June 30, 2018

Robert Charles Gesteland, PhD (formerly of Madison, WI; Cincinnati, OH; and Evanston, IL) passed away June 30 in Wilmington, NC. Robert (Bob) was born July 1, 1930 in Madison WI. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in Electrical Engineering 1953. He was a member of Alph Tau Omega. He was editor of the Wisconsin Badger and the Daily Cardinal newspaper. He received a PhD in Neurophysiology from MIT in 1961. He served on the faculty at Northwestern University, moving to Cincinnati in 1985 where he directed the Neuroscience PhD program and served as Vice President for Research and Dean of graduate studies. He retired as professor emeritus in 2002. He is remembered for his good humor and love for adventure, his keen physiological insights, his dedication to his graduate students, and for his love of family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer Raymond Gesteland and Bernice Elver, and his beloved wife of 32 years Jean Smitherman Gesteland. He is survived by his loving wife Carolyn Barton Gesteland, his children Matthew Gesteland, Wendy (Gerry) Lackey, and Caroline Gesteland, his 6 grandchildren, his brothers Edward (Ann) Gesteland and Raymond (Harriett) Gesteland.
A memorial celebration will be held at the University of Cincinnati, September 1, 4:00-7:00 pm.
