Linnea Smith ’81, MD’84 Transforms Health Care in the Amazon

In 1990, Linnea Smith ’81, MD’84 founded the Amazon Medical Project, a 501(c)(3) serving Indigenous communities in Peru’s Amazon River Basin. A Wisconsin native, her first trip to the region sparked her desire to bring medical care to this remote area. Throughout its 35-year history, the clinic has provided support to thousands of individuals, treating more than 2,000 people in 2024 alone. With services ranging from dental treatment to disease prevention and family planning, the clinic believes that quality care knows no boundaries.
