For 25 years, Grandparents University (GPU) has brought generations together to celebrate what it means to be Badger. The program offers children ages seven to 14 and their grandparents an opportunity to live like students in the university dorms and explore new ideas and activities in the major of their choice.
GPU is a chance to make memories and engage in fun learning experiences at UW–Madison, and there are so many exciting additions to enjoy every year. Here are five new things happening at GPU in 2026.
- Hands-On Health Care
In the new occupational therapy major, participants will experience hands-on learning from experts in the field. They’ll also learn real-life skills for living strong and active lifestyles. - Get to Know Nature
New, nature-based field trips offer GPU-goers opportunities to enjoy a guided walking tour of Allen Centennial Garden, a trek through the Lakeshore Nature Preserve to the iconic Picnic Point, or a visit to the UW Botany Garden and Greenhouse to learn about plant habitats and biodiversity. - History in the Making
During a field trip to the University Archives, participants will learn how the UW’s history is preserved and shared by exploring historical materials from collections and creating hands-on art projects. - Secret Spy Math
In the new major Cryptography: Secret Spy Math, participants will learn about encoded messaging and investigate the ways it has shaped history — from protecting high-stakes messages and tracing battlefield ciphers to its role in modern internet commerce. - Pulling Back the Curtain
A field trip to the Wisconsin Union Theater offers a behind-the-scenes tour of the spaces where performances are brought to life. Participants will see the iconic stages and backstage areas, and they’ll learn about the history of the theater.
