- Oct. 01, 2024

Jacqueline Jones MA’72, PhD’76 won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize in history for her book No Right to an Honest Living: The Struggles of Boston’s Black Workers in the Civil War Era, which the committee described as “a breathtakingly original reconstruction of free Black life in Boston that profoundly reshapes our understanding of the city’s abolitionist legacy and the challenging reality for its Black residents.”
Jacqueline is professor emerita at the University of Texas–Austin, winner of the Bancroft Prize for Labor of Love, Labor of Sorrow, and a two-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize prior to her win. She also served as president of the American Historical Association in 2021, noting that she was succeeded by Jim Sweet, a UW professor of history. All hail UW History!
