Eric Obscherning (BS’15) advises APEC dialogue on healthcare financing in Bangkok, Thailand
The 21 member economies of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) face significant headwinds in terms of the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) combined with rapidly aging populations. To address these challenges, APEC economies have been working to strengthen healthcare systems and advance innovative, sustainable health financing solutions.
On November 5 in Bangkok, Thailand, members of the APEC Life Sciences Innovation Forum, which Eric Obscherning advises, collaborated with the Government of Thailand, the APEC Business Advisory Council and the Asia-Pacific Financial Forum to organize a dialogue on “Enhancing Innovation Healthcare Financing in Pursuit of Sustainable Healthcare.”
The purpose of the dialogue was to bring together senior finance officials, health officials, and private sector stakeholders to share best practices and explore sustainable healthcare financing solutions.
The dialogue utilized the APEC Checklist of Enablers for Alternative Health Financing as the basis for discussion on how to sustainably increase access to healthcare and help economies assess their policy and regulatory environment for enabling the adoption and deployment of alternative financing mechanisms.
Mr. Wisudhi Srisuphan, Deputy Minister of Finance of Thailand, opened the dialogue with keynote remarks.
Obscherning is an associate consultant at C&M International in Washington, D.C., a consulting firm and affiliate of Crowell & Moring LLP—one of the Financial Times’ top 20 “Most Innovative North American Law Firms.” Eric supports the firm’s global health practice, advising Fortune 100 pharmaceutical and medical device companies as they enter emerging markets, navigate policies and regulations, and develop strategic initiatives and public-private partnerships.
He works at the intersection of business strategy, public policy, and government affairs on issues related to life sciences innovation, rare diseases, orphan products, vaccine confidence, human papillomavirus, cervical cancer, tuberculosis, antimicrobial resistance, regulatory harmonization, and healthcare financing.
Eric received a B.S. in biology and English and a Certificate in Global Health from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
