Alec Schumacher Shortlisted for International Griffin Poetry Prize
- Jul. 15, 2026

Alec Schumacher MA’09, PhD’17 (Spanish) was recently honored in Toronto, Canada, alongside his cotranslator, Daniel Brozutski, for their translation of Chilean poet Elvira Hernández’s collected works, titled Bodies Found in Various Places. The Griffin Poetry Prize is awarded annually to the best book of poetry and has an international reach. Judges for the prize described the translation saying Borzutzky and Schumacher, “undertake the formidable task of conveying Hernández’s layered voice. Through their ability to sustain the destabilizing gesture of her writing, we are able, today, to recognize how deeply these poems speak to us.” Elvira Hernández is one of the most important voices of contemporary poetry in the Southern Cone.
