Dr. David Combs recognized with the WALSAA Outstanding Advisor Award
MADISON, Wis. (May 30, 2019) – WALSAA has been honoring advisors with the Outstanding Advisor Award since 1979. This year’s recipient is Dr. David Combs.
Combs was raised on a dairy farm in west central Minnesota, earned his Ph.D. in dairy science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and is currently a professor in the UW-Madison Department of Dairy Science. His research mainly focuses on forage utilization by dairy cattle. Combs is a past recipient of the J.S. Donald Farm and Industry Short Course Teaching Award.
Since 1985, Combs has played an important role in the dairy science department in both research and instruction. Each year, Combs serves as an advisor to 12 to 25 undergraduate students and teaches several courses from introductory livestock production to the dairy science capstone. Outside of the classroom, Combs has mentored and coached UW-Madison’s Dairy Challenge Team since 2002. Combs has played a large role in making Dairy Challenge the great experience and opportunity it is today for dairy students across the country. On top of these commitments, Combs has conducted research that has impacted multiple areas of the dairy industry.
Combs shared, “Advising students is something many of us do, and it is so important in helping students to find their niche in agriculture. I am always proud to point out to our students that this is something I think CALS advisors are particularly good at. Thank you, WALSAA for sponsoring this award!”
