The Red Shirt™: First Edition came out in the fall of 2008, although it wasn’t called “the first edition” at the time. It was just The Red Shirt™. There weren’t “editions” until the second came out in 2009. The name is a play on the UW’s primary school color and the athletic practice of “red-shirting” players who are part of the team but don’t compete on the field, saving a year of scholarship eligibility. (You probably didn’t need that explanation of the pun. But we thought it was worth noting why it’s not called The Cardinal Shirt™, even though cardinal is the UW’s actual primary school color.) The Red Shirt™ plan is fairly straightforward: offer alumni a UW–themed T-shirt and use the proceeds to support scholarships. It’s fashion with purpose. Each year since, the Wisconsin Alumni Association has created a new design, leading up to this year’s 18th edition. However, the 18th edition will actually be the 19th The Red Shirt™ T-shirt. In 2015, WAA offered two shirts: the eighth edition, plus a special design created by fashion star Virgil Abloh ’03. Designs today are selected after a vote by UW alumni.
