UW Leadership Changes and Position Searches in 2026

The next year holds much promise for UW–Madison and the Universities of Wisconsin, as three new leaders will take key positions to move the institutions forward. This summer, searches are underway for the Universities of Wisconsin president, UW–Madison chancellor, and UW director of athletics.

Here’s what you need to know about each of these efforts.

Universities of Wisconsin President

On April 7, the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents unanimously voted to dismiss the previous system president, Jay Rothman, citing a lack of confidence in his leadership. The following month Regent president Amy Bogost ’83 named UW–Superior chancellor Renee Wachter as interim president and announced the formation of a search and screen committee to identify the next president. The committee includes representatives from UW institutions across the state, including UW–Madison provost John Zumbrunnen. The committee has taken feedback at listening sessions across the state and through email. The latest on this search can be found here.

University of Wisconsin–Madison Chancellor

Earlier this year, Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin announced she would leave UW–Madison to assume the presidency of Columbia University. After her departure, Eric Wilcots, the former dean of the College of Letters & Science assumed the role of interim chancellor. The search for a permanent chancellor has officially begun with the formation of the Chancellor Search and Screen Committee. Amy Bogost, president of the UW System Board of Regents, is the chair of the committee, which also includes students, faculty, and community members. The chosen candidate must be approved by the full board of regents. This committee is also taking feedback.

UW Director of Athletics

In the spring, Chris McIntosh ’04, MS’19 left his position as the UW’s director of athletics to become the Big Ten Conference’s first deputy commissioner for strategy. The university appointed Marcus Sedberry, the deputy athletic director and football general manager, as the interim athletic director. Interim Chancellor Eric Wilcots formed a search committee and will be responsible for hiring the athletic director. The nine-member search committee is chaired by Lauren Bishop, an associate professor in the Sandra Rosenbaum School of Social Work at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, who serves as one of the university’s faculty athletics representatives to the Big Ten Conference and NCAA. The committee also includes campus leaders, community members, and several former Badger athletes. The latest on this search can be found here.
