With midterm elections approaching and funding for important UW–Madison programs and research at risk, now is the time to share what the university means to you. By telling your Badger story to your lawmakers and your community — and by staying informed about upcoming elections in your area — you make a difference for the UW.
Here’s how you can reach your representatives and learn more about the candidates running office.
1. Find out who your lawmakers are and know who’s on your ballot.
- In Wisconsin, you can access your state senate and assembly representatives at legis.wisconsin.gov. To learn about your representatives and to see their contact information enter your address online or call the state legislative directory at 1-800-362-9472.
- To learn more about your representatives in the U.S. congress visit senate.gov and house.gov and select your state.
- To see who’s on your ballot this fall and to learn more about candidates in your area, visit myvote.wi.gov.
2. Share your UW–Madison story.
- You can share your connection to the UW and information about the value the university provides for communities across Wisconsin and the world by writing to your lawmakers. Share your support for higher education and what the UW means to you.
- You can tell your Badger story here to share with the governor and your legislatures. Let your lawmakers know why UW–Madison matters to you and why you think higher education should be a priority in the budget. The best advocacy is a personal story, so share your UW connection. Your voice matters.
3. Use your vote.
- Your vote matters for the future of the UW. Elected officials help the university maintain critical funding and access to resources that make vital research possible and help provide exceptional educations to all Badgers.

4. Stay engaged with the UW and your fellow advocates.
- Join fellow UW–Madison advocates at the Fall Policy Forum in Madison to learn about the effects of public policy decisions on the UW.
- Support the UW by staying informed about the university’s budget priorities.
- Learn about the budget process and seek out information about the impact that UW–Madison makes across the state and the world.
