Engineering at the Bottom of the World

Sarah Gerarden ’21 (bachelor of science degree in civil engineering) is currently deployed to Antarctica for a year supporting scientific research operations at McMurdo Station. She served as construction coordinator for the carpentry shop during the 2025–26 summer season and is now wintering over as the facilities engineer, helping to maintain station infrastructure. Before heading south, her engineering career has included work on the Seattle light rail expansions and facilities at Walt Disney World.
