Political disagreement is a part of life on campus, but productive, respectful conservations aren’t always easy. As students, faculty, and staff navigate differences in political views, identities, and lived experiences, the solution isn’t to change what we believe, but how we engage with one another.
The Wisconsin Exchange is a new UW–Madison initiative designed to meet that challenge head-on. Launched this spring, the Wisconsin Exchange brings together existing programs and new opportunities to help members of the campus community engage across differences with curiosity, respect, and a commitment to dialogue rather than debate.
What is the Wisconsin Exchange?
The Wisconsin Exchange: Pluralism in Practice is a campuswide initiative at UW–Madison focused on strengthening civil dialogue across political, ideological, and identity differences. Rather than creating a single program, the initiative connects and amplifies existing efforts — such as the Discussion Project and Deliberation Dinners — while also launching new opportunities to make civil discourse a visible, everyday part of campus life.
How does it aim to change political conversations on campus?
The initiative shifts attention away from winning arguments and toward building understanding. By emphasizing listening, respectful questioning, and openness to disagreement, the Wisconsin Echange aims to reduce polarization and encourage more productive conversations.
When did it start?
The Wisconsin Exchange was announced in fall 2025, with a phased rollout beginning in early 2026. Events, workshops, and programs are scheduled throughout the academic year.
What does it look like in practice?
In practice, the Wisconsin Exchange supports:
- Facilitated dialogues and events focused on timely and complex issues
- Workshops and trainings that build communication skills
- Classroom and cocurricular programming that integrates pluralism into existing spaces
- Campus engagement efforts that highlight real examples of constructive dialogue
Who is paying for it?
Initial funding for the initiative comes from private donations. The Wisconsin Exchange operates independently of partisan or political organizations.
