Dr. Ruth Etzel receives Herbert Needleman Scientist-Advocate Award

Ruth A. Etzel, M.D., Ph.D., a pediatrician and the Director of the Office of Children’s Health Protection at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C., was the inaugural recipient of the Herbert L. Needleman Scientist-Advocate Award from the International Society for Children’s Health and the Environment. The award, which was given in January 2019 in Mérida, Mexico, honors an individual who has battled to protect children from environmental chemicals and persisted in the face of opposition. During 2016-2018, Dr. Etzel led the development of a comprehensive federal strategy to reduce childhood lead exposures by removing sources of lead in housing, soil, air, water, toys and food.
