About your Speaker
A talented performer and teacher, Professor Richard Davis has been transforming the way music is taught at UW-Madison for more than 35 years. Approaching students with knowledge, compassion and an open heart, Davis teaches more than just music — he teaches character. As a professor of bass, jazz history and jazz, Davis shows students that the historical context of a piece of music is just as important as its notes.
Davis is a world-famous bassist who has performed and recorded with numerous music legends, including Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis and Leonard Bernstein. He has received many awards for being an educator, musician and advocate. Currently, Davis is president of the Madison Wisconsin Institute for the Healing of Racism, Inc., and has worked with the Retention Action Project (RAP) on campus.
