Neither a pandemic nor a virtual vetting process can keep the Twin Cities Badgers scholarship committee from fulfilling its mission. Each year our Twin Cities chapter raises funds for our scholarships through profits from our events, as well as through generous donations of local alumni. These funds are awarded to Twin Cities-area high school seniors who will be pursuing a degree at UW-Madison starting in the fall of 2021. This year, though fundraising efforts were challenged due to the inability to hold events, we were able to tap into chapter reserves from years past to continue our support for the next generation of Future Badgers. The scholarship committee will be kicking off its 2021 vetting process here in Q1.
Scholarship Committee chairperson Adam Tarshish is at the helm of this year’s 9-person committee’s selection process that will focus on the following: need, first generation college students, students from underrepresented populations, and merit. The selection process will be broken into 3 phases: Application Review; Candidate Interviews and then Applicant selection. Application review involves sifting through the hundreds of scholarship applications from the Wish Portal containing both detailed academic transcripts and essays that highlight each student’s personal journey. Through the initial application review process, we will narrow down the field to a subset to be interviewed by members of the committee. By following a standardized interview and rating process, the field of students will be narrowed down to a handful of awardees and alternates.
The scholarship selection process is a multi-week intensive push beginning mid-February, lasting through March. While this year’s committee is up and running, we are always looking for helping hands for future efforts.
