2017 Badger of the Year WAA HOI Chapter

Cindy Dermody

Cindy Dermody is passionate about helping others and her volunteering started at the age of 15. Cindy grew up in a suburb of Milwaukee and while in high school, she was a candy striper (the term used in the 70’s) at a local hospital.  During the same year, Cindy was recognized as the Wisconsin “Volunteen of the Year” by the Wisconsin Hospital Association.

When it came time for college, Cindy remained in the Badger state and attended the University of Wisconsin. Her freshman year, she joined Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, which presented her with additional volunteer and leadership opportunities.

Shortly after graduation in 1981, Cindy accepted a sales position with a pharmaceutical company. The territory was in Peoria, IL.  While in Peoria, she met and married her husband, Tom, in 1984.  She remained in the pharmaceutical field for ten years, and when she resigned to be a stay-at-home mom, she was ranked #1 in sales in the Midwest.

When their daughter, Colleen, was a toddler, Cindy continued to have the desire to help others so she joined a network marketing company, and for ten years, she sold educational toys and gave people the opportunity to join the company as well. At one time, Cindy managed 250 consultants across the country and on the island of Guam.

For the last nine years, Cindy has been employed as the Underwriting Manager of Peoria Public Radio - WCBU. Due to Cindy’s efforts, underwriting sales have tripled.

While in Peoria, Cindy has volunteered for many organizations and has been president of Community Children’s Theatre and the Peoria Alumnae Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta. In the near future, Cindy will join the board of Women In Leadership.

In 2012, Cindy faced a challenge when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Following surgery and chemotherapy, Cindy again wanted to help others.  She completed the “Survivor for Life” training program and has assisted other newly diagnosed women travel along their treatment path.
