WAA: Boston Chapter Founders’ Day Celebration

Join us for a spirited Founders’ Day gathering to celebrate everything we love about our university. Build connections with local alumni as you experience an intriguing presentation from fellow Badger David McDonald, professor emeritus in the Department of History and special assistant for athletics, who will discuss recent pivotal changes in collegiate sports. When Badgers connect, great things happen!

The cost is $35 per person or $25 for recent graduates. Hors d’oeuvres and access to billiards and shuffleboard are included. A cash bar will be available.

About the Speaker

David MacLaren McDonald, PhD, retired in August 2023 as the Alice D. Mortenson Distinguished Chair of Russian History in the Department of History at UW–Madison, after 35 years as a member of the faculty. In 2018, he received the Chancellor’s Award for Distinguished Teaching. In addition to his widely renowned scholarship on Russian history, McDonald is also known for his expertise on the behind-the-scenes intricacies of modern sports. His interest in intercollegiate athletics springs from his tenure with the UW–Madison Athletic Board, which he chaired in 1999–2000. This was followed by a four-year appointment as the “chancellor’s special assistant for athletics,” an executive position created in response to the so-called Shoe Box affair, which came to light in 2000. McDonald continues to conduct research and teach part-time in retirement, teaching special seminars on Russian history, the history of his native Canada, and modern athletics. He enjoys travel to Canada and Europe, the unending quest for a viable golf swing, and following the developments of intercollegiate athletics during a time of unprecedented and unpredictable change.
