UW-Madison Alumna Selected by U.S. Department of State for Prestigious English Language Teaching Fellowship: Christine Esche
The U.S. Department of State announced the selection of Christine Esche ’09 for a 10-month fellowship project developing an English program in Panama at the Universidad Especializada de las Américas – Panamá. Esche is one of 140 U.S. citizens selected for the 2017-2018 English Language Fellow Program.
Esche has a Bachelor of Science in International Studies from UW-Madison and a Master of Arts in Linguistics from UW-Milwaukee. She taught English as a second language (ESL) at the Council for the Spanish Speaking for two years, followed by three years of serving as a lead ESL instructor at Waukesha County Technical College, where she has been granted a one-year leave of absence. This will be Esche’s most extensive period abroad, though she has previously studied in Chile, Mexico, Poland, and India as well as traveled to nearly thirty other countries.
The English Language Fellow Program is the premier opportunity for experienced teachers of English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) to enact meaningful and sustainable changes in the way that English is taught abroad. Through projects developed by U.S. Embassies in more than 80 countries, Fellows work directly with local teachers, students, and educational professionals to improve the quality of English language instruction.
