In his final years he advocated for the cause of single-payer healthcare. His passions included international travel, classical music, photography, and the care of his roses and fruit trees. He is survived by Clare, his wife of 57 years; children Elizabeth, Deborah, Matthew, and Rachel; and 9 grandchildren.
