Obituary
Mr. Nicholas Phillip Milano passed away peacefully on January 21, 2020, in Bloomingdale, IL, at age 97. He married Maxine Kulas on May 28, 1949. They were married 70 years, with his wife passing away exactly 30 days prior to Nick.
He was born July 31, 1922, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, graduated from Lincoln High School in 1940. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 during World War II. Upon returning home, he began a career at International Harvester where he rose to Chief Metallurgist during a distinguished 28-year career there. While working full-time, and as a new husband and father, he received his B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Marquette (1950) and his Master of Science degree in metallurgy from the University of Wisconsin (1954). His professional career culminated with 16 equally distinguished years at Illinois Gear, during which he was also elected to be the President of the very prestigious American Society of Metals (ASM) – a crowning achievement.
Nick valued his co-workers and professional colleagues immensely and felt that his mentoring of many of them was an even greater achievement, and of more satisfaction, than his many world-class scientific accomplishments, publications, and awards. A devout Catholic, he was a leader in the Holy Name Society, taught Sunday school to high school students for years, and impressed all with his deep morality. He was involved with the Boy Scouts, taught Sunday School for years, was a good singer and an excellent dancer.
He is survived by his sons, Dean (Gay), Paul (Judy), Mark (Gerry Valero), Steven, and Phillip (Robin Dycus-Milano), grandsons Evan (Marisa), Steven, Jacob, Lucas, Benjamin, and great grandson Anthony, and other much loved relatives, including those in Italy with whom he reconnected years ago with much fondness.
