Alumni Open Wisconsin Cheese Store on State Street: Melissa McNulty, Kenneth McNulty

Wisconsin Cheese Mart, founded in Milwaukee, WI, in 1938, and owned by UW-Madison alumni Ken and Melissa McNulty, opened its second location at 119 State Street, Madison, WI, on July 1. The McNultys, who met while attending UW-Madison and married in 1993, bought the Wisconsin Cheese Mart from its previous owner in 2003. Tremendous growth in both the company’s online and brick-and-mortar business prompted the addition of a new store in Madison.

“Opening a store here was an easy decision. The foot traffic on State Street is incredible. We want our customers to come in and sample some great Wisconsin cheese products, learn a little and have fun. When they return home, we hope they go online to buy our products for themselves or to ship to friends and family,” said Melissa McNulty (BA ’91). The company ships cheese across the United States, and the website has an expanded offering of products in the brick-and-mortar locations. She also said she’s happy to be back near the campus where many family members, including her father and father-in-law, and two grown daughters attended school.

Ken McNulty (BA ’92), was a linguist in the U.S. Air Force stationed in Berlin, Germany, before returning to Madison to finish his degree in International Relations. He spent 10 years after graduation working as a business management consultant both in Chicago and Germany before becoming an entrepreneur. “This is an ideal growth opportunity for us — a great way to acquire new online customers.”

Wisconsin Cheese Mart will have its grand opening event, including meet-and-greets with Wisconsin cheese makers, throughout the day of September 21. “We are so excited to be in Madison! We look forward to many successful years here,” Melissa said.
