Dr. Glen J. Stuesser, UW Medical School Class of ’53, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016. Glen died peacefully at home with his wife Joan, and other family members at his side.

He grew up on a dairy farm in Richfield, Wisconsin, graduated from Slinger High School, and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces. Upon completion of his service, he began his studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, graduating from the UW School of Medicine in 1953. Dr. Stuesser practiced general surgery at Madison General/Meriter Hospital and as a partner at the Quisling Clinic. He served as Chief of Staff of the hospital for several years and retired in 1990.

Widely known and respected as a surgeon, Dr. Stuesser also took an active role in his community. He was a key member of the Verona Optimists for many years. He often visited schools and organizations to present information on various topics.

Always a “farmer at heart,” Glen leaves behind a sanctuary of nature, wildlife and gardens at his Verona homestead. His cherished grove of American chestnut trees was his pride and joy, second only to his large family of 8 children, 22 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Glen’s legacy continues on through his children, the young medical professionals he mentored, the patients who loved him, his large extended family, and the community members, and foreign students he loved. His fascinating stories of a life well lived are treasured by all who knew him.
