Janet Lathrop Wins UMass Amherst Chancellor’s Citation Award

The University of Massachusetts Amherst Chancellor’s Citation Award recognizes employees who have demonstrated outstanding performance in helping the university achieve its goals and objectives through original contributions to the university, attainment of high-priority university objectives, performance “beyond the call of duty” and/or achievement of significant improvements in productivity or savings in university operations. Janet (Schumacher) Lathrop, a science writer for the past 11 years in the campus’s Office of News and Media Relations, was one of seven staff winners of the 2019 award for helping to bring news about research in the College of Natural Sciences and School of Public Health and Health Sciences to the public and the media’s attention. She was cited by News Director Ed Blaguszewski for placing numerous stories per year in such major publications as the Boston Globe and others to advance the campus’s research reputation. She is a 1969 graduate of James Madison Memorial High School in Madison. Lathrop has worked at weekly and daily newspapers in Arizona and Michigan, and for environmental news organizations that sent her all over the world to report from medical and environmental health conferences.
