The state legislature will soon begin the process of creating a 2009-2011 state budget. It is essential that these legislators realize the importance of state funding to allow the University of Wisconsin to continue providing a top-notch education for Wisconsin residents.
By signing our petition, you are letting your voice be heard. We want the leadership in the state legislature to know that alumni care about the well-being of the university and of the state. Our petition urges the legislature to make funding for the University of Wisconsin a top priority in the upcoming budget negotiations.
Alumni of the University of Wisconsin Petition to the Wisconsin Legislature
Dear Governor Doyle, Senate President and Assembly Speaker:
The University of Wisconsin is not only our state’s premiere university and a world class research institution, the UW also serves as an important economic stimulus to the state. A strong university helps guide the economic well-being of the state of Wisconsin. Here are just some of the facts:
• Two-thirds of Wisconsin residents who apply to UW-Madison are admitted.
• 59% of the entering class in 2007-2008 are from Wisconsin.
• Students from every Wisconsin county attend the university.
• The University of Wisconsin-Madison is responsible for creating almost 75,000 jobs in the state.
• UW-Madison’s impact alone on the state’s economy is $4.7 billion, more than 10 times the state’s annual investment.
• 139,141 UW alumni live and work in Wisconsin, contributing to the state economy.
• Over 200 companies have been created based on patents from University of Wisconsin research
• Wisconsin was ranked 49th in states’ higher education appropriation by the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance
• As other universities cherry-pick our brightest, most productive faculty, we risk statewide economic decline. During the past year alone, outside job offers to our faculty nearly doubled, and our ability to selectively retain those faculty with counter offers has steadily declined.
• UW-Madison ranks last among peer institutions in faculty salary. A full professor’s salary in 2006-2007 was $14,000 below the median salary. This trend has been steadily decreasing since 2000.
We must not let more budget cuts cripple the university, and then the economic welfare of the state. I urge you to make the University of Wisconsin a priority in the state budget.
Sincerely,
