Message from Dean Buss
to UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine Alumni
Welcome to the UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine’s alumni e-newsletter! Periodically, we’ll keep in touch to let you know what’s happening at your alma mater. In this issue:
WHAT’S NEW AT THE SCHOOL?
Hemodialysis Coming to UW Veterinary Care
UW Veterinary Care is very excited to announce that we will be providing a new and advanced therapy to our referral community—Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT). CRRT is a type of hemodialysis, or blood purification, most commonly used in patients with acute kidney injury or failure. Unlike conventional intermittent hemodialysis, CRRT is used continuously until renal function improves. Therefore, it is a slower and more physiologic method of removing uremic toxins and correcting fluid and electrolyte imbalances. This treatment modality has only become available for use in veterinary medicine within the past decade and is accessible at a very limited number of facilities throughout the country.
Please feel free to email or call the Internal Medicine or Critical Care services for more information or case consultation. If you believe you have a patient that may be a candidate for/benefit from this therapy, our team is happy to review the referral process, options, prognosis, and financial estimates. Call (608) 263-2665 (8 am-5 pm, M-F) or (608) 263-7600 (after hours, weekends).
Laparoscopic Liver Biopsies Now Available
The Small Animal Internal Medicine service at UW Veterinary Care is now offering laparoscopic liver biopsies at a package price of $750. This includes general anesthesia, biopsy and culture, copper levels, and clotting times (PT/PTT). This minimally invasive procedure will allow us to obtain full thickness samples to aid in the diagnosis of liver disease. If you have questions or a case you would like to refer, please contact the Internal Medicine Service at 608-263-7600 and ask to speak with a clinician, or Shannon Radford, CVT, the Internal Medicine Coordinator.
Great Fun with Bucky and FriendsOn September 10 over 150 people joined our early morning tailgate party before an 11 am Badger kickoff. In addition to great weather, Bucky entertained guests while UW Marching Band music played through our new outdoor speaker system. This free event, which included a one-hour continuing education presentation by Dr. Ruthanne Chun, was made possible in part by contributions from Boehringer Ingelheim, CEVA Animal Health, Elanco Animal Health, Merck Animal Health, Midwest Veterinary Supply, Nutramax Laboratories, and 3M. Following the tailgate, guests enjoyed seeing the Badgers defeat Oregon State University 35-0. Pictures of the day are available on our alumni page and our Facebook alumni page. If you missed this event, we hope you will join us next year! A Tradition of ExcellenceSoon the UW Foundation will be mailing out its end of the year appeal to all University of Wisconsin alumni. Please watch for this letter and take the time to read how private support makes a difference to our educational, clinical and research programs. This letter references our 2010-2011 year in review report and reflects on 100 years of veterinary science on the UW-Madison campus. If you haven’t donated to the school this year, we hope you will join your fellow alumni who have. Gifts to the Dean’s Annual Fund for Excellence are especially important as they help make our alumni receptions and communications with you possible. Together with our alumni, clients, and other friends we look forward to continuing the great tradition of excellence in veterinary medicine at the University of Wisconsin. (If you have already donated to the UW Foundation this year or to any unit on campus, you will not receive the mailing.)

Holiday Card and Poster for Animal LoversIt’s the gift that gives twice. You can recognize the colleagues, friends or family in your life with fund-raiser holiday cards from the School of Veterinary Medicine. In addition, this year we have a limited edition poster signed and numbered by the artist. Proceeds from the sale of our holiday cards and posters benefit the school, allowing us to update facilities, obtain new equipment, and conduct clinical trials to benefit animal health. Both the card and poster were donated by Georgene Pomplun, acclaimed Madison artist. Poster quantities are limited, so please order early if you want this print. Click here to purchase your holiday cards.
Put a Little Hope in People’s Stockings
Once again we are offering “Hope Against Cancer” bracelets as a holiday gift. What a great stocking stuffer—a bright red UW Veterinary Care “Hope Against Cancer” bracelet with an added bonus of making a donation to the UW School of Veterinary Medicine. Show your support for hope against cancer by sporting one of these bracelets yourself and sharing them with friends and family. Bracelets can be purchased in the lobby of the Small Animal Hospital or by mail (postage is $4.85 for flat rate priority mail for all orders regardless of quantity). The $5.00 per bracelet donation goes directly to the Hospital. If you would like to order bracelets, please contact the school’s Office for Advancement at (608) 265-9692 or email Kristi Thorson at kvthorson@vetmed.wisc.edu.
2011 Updated Vaccine Guidelines
Dr. Ron Schultz wants all UW alumni to please read and follow the updated guidelines, as he would like his students to set an example for the rest of the world! There is a new section that includes 60 frequently asked questions with answers. They are also updating the feline guidelines, which should be out by early 2012. Click here for the updated 2011 Vaccine Task Force Guidelines from AAHA.
Dog with Suspected Immune Mediated Polyarthropathy or Fever of Unknown Origin
We are evaluating surrogate markers of inflammation in dogs with immune mediated polyarthropathy (IMPA). IMPA is a common cause of fever of unknown origin and typically causes signs of lameness, joint effusion, lethargy, and anorexia. Diagnosis and monitoring this disease requires arthrocentesis and sedation, which can be technically challenging, expensive, and not without risks to the patient. The overall goal of the study is to identify a surrogate marker of inflammation that correlates with clinical and cellular improvement of polyarthropathy. This marker may possibly be used to monitor treatment efficacy and diagnose relapse of IMPA. Dogs will have force plate analysis and wear an accelerometer attached to their collar to assess lameness and mobility. Click here for more information or to arrange to refer a dog for enrollment, please contact Robin Sereno at (608) 335-8254. Please contact Dr. JD Foster at (608) 263-7600 or Dr. Lauren Trepanier (608) 265-9022 with any questions regarding the study.
