John Gehring was just looking for gas money to get to Minneapolis for a job interview in February 1990. Kristin Reinke wanted an alternative to the Greyhound bus to get to St. Paul for a wedding. John pulled Kristin's name from the Ride Board at Memorial Union, they made the 5 hour trip in a snowstorm, had their first date the following Saturday at a Badger hockey playoff game, and have now been married for 15 years.

My life changed forever on just my second day as a freshman. It all began in the Lakeshore Dorms during welcome week in 1995. I visit a friend over at Sullivan Hall, who casually introduces me to her new friend across the hall. So, I meet this girl, and we strike up a great conversation. After I leave (as she's remembered the story in years since), she tells her roommate that she just met her future husband. Amazingly, she was right! We've been together ever since and were married in Madison in 2001. Without UW, our paths may have never crossed -- and I might have missed the greatest gift of my entire life.
