John joined the WAA team in 2001. His primary duties include writing and editing for On Wisconsin and Badger Insider magazines. Before he came to the association, he spent nearly seven years in children's publishing as an editor with the Cricket Magazine Group, where he helped create illustrated literary magazines and books. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling and hiking with his wife, Lynn Gutknecht. John has his mother's brown eyes and his father's poor posture.

Paula is both a former Daily Cardinal business manager and the oldest living former Wisconsin Alumni Student Board member in captivity. After an inauspicious career start selling detergent for Procter & Gamble, she moved into what she'd intended to do: advertising. Paula has worked as an account executive, traffic manager and proofreader at numerous ad agencies in Milwaukee, Dallas, Vermont and Madison, as well as at Eating Well Magazine.

A part-time member of the writing and editing team for WAA's On Wisconsin and Badger Insider Magazines since 1996, her main responsibility is compiling On Wisconsin's Alumni News section. In 2005, she also launched a part-time professional organizing business called Breathing Room. Paula is glad to be back in Madison with her alumnus husband, two great kids and squirrel-obsessed dog.

Gary joined WAA in 2000 and leads the association's human resources, financial and accounting activities. He plans for staff needs and helps WAA staff members maximize their potential. In addition, Gary is responsible for financial management, reporting, budgeting and long-term forecasting.

Gary is a CPA, and prior to joining WAA, he spent 25 years as a partner with a national accounting and consulting firm. He also taught at the UW School of Business. In his spare time, Gary loves to travel (especially to any ocean), participate in the old Scottish ice game of curling and spend time with his wife and sons.

A native of Madison and a lifelong Badger fan, Mark came to the Wisconsin Alumni Association in 1986 from a manufacturing firm. Mark is responsible for all business aspects of WAA, including budgeting, financial planning, purchasing and personnel issues. He and his wife, Kathe, have two children, Matthew and Katie. An outdoor enthusiast, Mark spends most of his free time camping, hiking and relaxing at his cottage on Mirror Lake in the Wisconsin Dells.

Faustina leads WAA's diversity efforts and works with U.S. chapters east of the Mississippi. Prior to joining WAA in 2007, she spent six years with Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority working in human resources. A Madison native, Faustina has a commitment to social justice and equality, which can be reflected in her work at WAA. In her personal time, she is a mother by day, spoken word poet by night.

Paula became the president and CEO of the Wisconsin Alumni Association in January 2000. During the previous eight years, she served the organization as its associate executive director, chief operating officer and chief financial officer. In addition to her position as president, Paula also serves on the chancellor's University Relations Team.

Paula is a national leader in alumni relations, as a member of the Commission on Communications for the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) and the Council of Alumni Association Executives (CAAE). She is current co-chair of the CAAE Summer Institute, and is past co-chair of the CASE District Five Conference's alumni relations track. She is also the recipient of the first alumni relations fellowship from CAAE.

In the Madison community, Paula is a member of Tempo International and serves on the board of directors of the Wisconsin Academy of Arts, Letters and Science, and the advisory boards of the University Club and the University of Wisconsin Foundation.

Prior to joining WAA, Paula was UW-Madison's associate athletic director, with responsibility for directing the eleven sports that comprised the women's athletics program.

Paula's wheaten terrier, Henry, provides her with lots of laughs and a healthy dose of exercise. She also loves spending her time cooking, entertaining, snorkeling and enjoying all aspects of the arts.

Amanda joined the WAA team in 2006 to design marketing and communications pieces. She previously worked at Pacific Cycle in Madison, designing bicycles and skateboards as well as print materials.

Badger fans might recognize the Breitenbach name. Amanda's late, great-uncle Otto Breitenbach was a long-time administrator for the UW athletic department and the Badger State Games.

Scott is a member of WAA’s information technology team, where he is responsible for data management and making sure that the organization’s databases are up and running. Before joining WAA in 2005, he worked for an insurance company and for UW Hospital and Clinics.

A native of Solon Springs, Wisconsin, Scott came to Madison in 1994 to study mathematics and never left. His roots recently grew even deeper: he’s a new homeowner. When he’s not shoveling the driveway, Scott enjoys cross-country skiing.

As senior director of school and college relations, Kevin works to create collaboration opportunities with UW-Madison's campus partners. Before joining WAA in 2007, Kevin worked for the UW-Extension Division of Entrepreneurship and Economic Development and in a UW-Madison technology transfer office, where he facilitated interactions between UW faculty and Wisconsin businesses.

A native of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, Kevin loves participating in and watching sports, especially the Badgers, Packers and Brewers. He's a youth softball and basketball coach, and enjoys boating and fishing on Lake Mendota and other lakes and rivers around the state with his family in the summer. In the winter, he can often be found sitting on a bucket on those same lakes and rivers when they freeze over. Kevin and his wife Tricia '96 live in Waunakee with their children, Maggie and Jack.

Lifelong Learning Specialist

After a one-year stint as a WAA student intern, Ellen joined the staff in 2006. A Racine, Wisconsin, native, she began her college career at the University of Minnesota before transferring to the UW to study human development and family studies.

At WAA, Ellen works with the UW Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and its Wednesday Nite @ the Lab and senior lecture series programs. She also helps plan alumni lifelong learning events on campus and throughout the country, from researching venues and selecting menus to lining up speakers and developing content for invitations and the Web site.

Mary joined WAA in 2006 to oversee the association’s largest department. She worked for The Irish Press Group in Dublin, Ireland and Thomson Newspapers in the U.S. and Canada before moving to Madison to become a senior executive with Capital Newspapers. Mary served as president of the Newspaper Association of America in 2006–07. A quick study, she’s already a Badger fan.

Niki has been with the alumni association since 1989. Her responsibilities include serving as co-editor for On Wisconsin Magazine and as editor for WAA's annual report. She also serves as consulting editor for other campus publications and coordinates the selection process for WAA's awards programs. Although Niki graduated from the University of Chicago, she is happy to be an adopted Badger.

Kate is responsible for the association’s media and public relations, with a focus on communicating about WAA’s people and programs. She also manages marketing for WAA chapters, advocacy initiatives and outreach programs. Prior to joining WAA in 2007, she spent five years in communications and university relations for the UW System and served as a reporter for the Associated Press. Kate is also a proud alumna of The Daily Cardinal student newspaper, where she once served as campus editor, office manager and vice president of the board of directors.

James is responsible for the development and management of WAA’s online initiatives. Prior to joining the association in 2006, he worked for the Wisconsin Historical Society.

James has been a student, teacher, writer, photographer, art director, web designer, artist, drummer, journalist, online pundit, analyst, model, bad painter, and a rock star in his own mind. He has lived in New Jersey, Great Britain, Florida, Texas, North Carolina and Wisconsin and enjoys music, fountain pens, fonts, anything happening online, as well as making lists.

Executive Assistant and Secretary to the Board

Lynn joined the WAA staff in 2002. Always a Midwesterner at heart, Lynn relocated to Madison from Seattle, where she worked in corporate development and board relations for a foundation for public education. Lynn's job keeps her busy with WAA's Board of Directors program and communications, and assisting the President and CEO with university and community relations.

She has two sons: Eric, who lives in Monona, Wisconsin; and Kristopher '00, who resides in Milwaukee. She enjoys expressing her creative side in the kitchen as well as in writing. Lynn's favorite restorative getaways are the Pacific Northwest and Amelia Island, Florida.

Career and Corporate Relations Specialist

Gina joined WAA in 2007, where she is responsible for the association’s career and corporate relations programming. A 2005 UW graduate, she first tried her hand at a Starbucks career, but found that “life on the bean” was too expensive. After a stint in human resources, she found herself drawn back to the university with a chance to reconnect with the school and alumni. A Madison native, Gina is a lifelong Badger and Packer fan. When asked about her views on life, her only response was “Favre.”

Gina's hobbies include watching VH1, going to movies, and shoveling her car out of the snow.

Senior Director of State Relations

Mike joined WAA in 2004 as the director of state relations. He serves as the WAA contact for Wisconsin chapters, coordinates the UW for You Program and is the point person for the Alumni for Wisconsin advocacy initiative. Mike's experience includes work in the Wisconsin State Capitol and in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, D.C. Previously, he was the development director for the College of Fine Arts and Communication at UW-Stevens Point. Mike is an active runner and lifelong Badger fan. He and his wife, Renee, have two children, Megan and Ryan.

After serving as a WAA student intern, Becky joined the staff in 2006 to help manage registration for the organization’s many special events. Becky hails from the small town of Campbellsport, Wisconsin and is a first generation Badger. At the UW, she studied child development and was a Badger cheerleader for four years, cheering on the men’s and women’s basketball teams.

Accounting Manager

Jane has been with WAA since 1986. Her responsibilities include processing accounts payable and accounts receivable invoices, following up on unpaid accounts, and assisting with financial statements and projections. She also works with WAA's student groups, affiliate groups, and schools and college partners.

In her spare time, Jane enjoys golfing, bowling and spending time with her two children.

Operations Specialist

As Operations Specialist, Becky manages the operations of the entire WAA office. She plays a key role in maintaining office efficiencies and directing organizational functions. Becky also coordinates mailings and oversees office supplies and print schedules. Outside of work, Becky enjoys scrapbooking, crafts and spending time with her husband, two kids and two greyhounds.

Director, Alumni Travel

Sheri has been with the alumni association since 1986. In that time, the travel program has grown to include more than 50 international travel opportunities.

International travel has a wide variety of possibilities, and Sheri is continuing to find ways to expand the travel market. With this in mind, partnerships have been formed with campus organizations to offer astronomy-related and community-service tours. Sheri also works to reconnect international alumni with the university by sponsoring receptions abroad during hosted tours.

In addition, Sheri is responsible for overseeing WAA's Home Field Advantage football weekend packages that bring out-of-state alumni back to campus for home football games. Other athletic travel opportunities as well as post-season bowl and tournament games keep the WAA travel department busy year-round!

Sheri and her husband, Jay, live outside of Lodi and have two very active children, Brandon and Cassidy. Both kids have been recruited at times to play hosting roles on football trips – mom is training them well.

P.J. enjoys working in an area where she can create that "special" event for WAA and our many partners on and off campus.

After graduation, P.J. worked in elementary education, but soon found that teaching was not her forte. So she turned her sights to the legal world where she spent 13 years in corporate and criminal law practices. P.J. decided to head back into academia and joined WAA in 1992.

P.J. and her husband, Dave MFA'73, live in Madison where he has owned and operated Monroe Street Framing for more than 25 years.

As WAA's web assistant, Rebekah is responsible for updating web content and sending out exciting, highly anticipated e-mails. She is also trying her hand at ghostwriting for Ask Abe. She worked in fashion in New York and with several different web sites, before returning to Madison and joining the association in 2007.

Rebekah enjoys Starbucks, Project Runway, grammar and proper punctuation.

Jessika studied advertising and public relations at the UW's School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Prior to coming to WAA, she was an account manager with the Madison advertising firm of Knupp & Watson. A native of North Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, Jessika is a first-generation college graduate.

Her duties at WAA include developing marketing strategy, coordinating marketing efforts for student and young alumni programs, athletic travel and major corporate events, and co-advising the Wisconsin Alumni Student Board and UW Homecoming Committee.

As a writer and editor on WAA's marketing and communications team, Brian helps develop print and online communications for UW alumni and friends. Before joining WAA in 2007, Brian was a writer with the State Bar of Wisconsin in Madison. His marketing and advertising writing has earned several Addy awards from Advertising Federations in Madison and the Fox Valley. Brian was also voted the winner of WAA's 2008 Chili Cook-Off.

Ruth works in WAA's Customer Service Unit, providing personalized and comprehensive service to alumni, members, campus partners, students and visitors who walk in our doors, call, e-mail or write to us.

Before coming to WAA, Ruth was a senior merchandise manager at Younkers-West Towne. After working in retail for more than 20 years, however, she was ready for a change of scenery and a new career. Working for WAA is a "dream come true" for Ruth — promoting the best university, with the best alumni in the world! Along with being a mom to two great sons, she also serves as surrogate mom to countless WASBies. Her husband, Dave, a UW Graduate School alumnus, is retired from his career as a hydrogeologist for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

As director of student services, Amy is involved in recognizing some of UW-Madison's finest students through WAA's Outstanding Student Awards. Inspired to return to Europe after a wonderful UW-Madison study abroad experience in France, Amy lived in London for nearly a year before joining WAA in 1998. Amy is a Wisconsin native, originally from Stratford, a small town in the center of the state.

Kate is a member of WAA’s information technology team, where she is responsible for updating alumni records with demographic information.

A native of Mayville, Wisconsin, Kate moved to Madison by way of Milwaukee in 1985. Prior to joining WAA in 2005, she worked for the state of Wisconsin for 11 years and managed the Peacock, a gift shop just a few blocks off campus. While working for the association, Kate’s also pursuing new studies: she recently took a UW class in geology with plans to tackle anthropology or archeology. She says she loves learning and the challenge of being a student again.

Wade is the system/network administrator and provides computer support for software and hardware, solving technical problems for the WAA staff. He has been doing technical support and system/network administration for more than 10 years, and has experience with Classic Mac OS, Mac OS X, Linux and Windows.

Mark joined WAA in 2005, where his duties include coordinating marketing efforts for the Lifelong Learning program, the Alumni for Wisconsin advocacy initiative and in-state programs, international travel, and several of WAA’s school and college partners. He is also responsible for conducting surveys and market research.

A former house fellow at Chadbourne Hall, Mark studied advertising and public relations at the UW, coupled with psychology. After graduation, he was an account manager for promotions agencies in Chicago and Madison.

Alumni Services Specialist

Since joining the WAA team in 2000, Kevin has assumed the dubious responsibility of being the initial "voice and face" for the many alumni, students and visitors who connect with WAA on a daily basis. A native of North Freedom, Wisconsin, Kevin has called Madison his home since arriving at the UW in 1985.

During his student days, Kevin worked 30 hours a week and was actively involved in his fraternity's campus and philanthropic events, such as Homecoming and Humorology. Having worked in various capacities at Firstar Bank for more than 14 years, he decided it was time for a career switch. Seeking a job that utilized strong customer service excellence while reconnecting with the UW, Kevin was delighted to accept the position of alumni services specialist. In his spare time, he enjoys playing piano, biking, Rollerblading and landscaping.

Angie has spent the majority of her career at WAA directing the creation and evolution of the alumni database that serves WAA and the entire campus community. She conducts training on several software applications and oversees the exchange of data that WAA shares with the UW Foundation, the online alumni directory, and WAA's school and college partners.

Angie and her husband, Steve, live just north of Madison in Waunakee. They have one son, Peter, who is a 2008 UW-Eau Claire grad. Angie enjoys cooking, gardening, attending Badger hockey games and girlfriend gatherings. Preferring sports that involve cute shoes, she golfs in the summer and bowls in the winter.

Senior Director of U.S. Chapters and Volunteer Training

Deb's responsibilities include working with a variety of Wisconsin alumni chapters on the West Coast and improving systems for training alumni volunteers. She joined the WAA staff in 2004.

Deb's career began with work in Olympic and college athletics. She eventually landed at the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA), where she helped direct championships for track, men's gymnastics, volleyball, softball and women's basketball. After earning a master's at the University of Arkansas, Deb became the director of student life and recreation at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo. A lifelong Badger, Deb is happy to return to her roots in Wisconsin.

As the senior creative director, Colleen is responsible for incorporating the WAA brand in print collateral and Web design. Nancy is the "traffic cop" of the office. She knows exactly what it takes to follow an invitation, newsletter or Web page from concept to completion, which makes her the perfect person to "police" the marketing system. She coordinates the development and design of all printed and electronic publications. Her prior experience as the chapter coordinator and graphic designer have given her unique insight into the needs of both volunteers and programmers at WAA.

A Madison native, Karen and her husband Dan ’77, MBA’79, live in Middleton with their two sons, Conor and Patrick.

Along with a degree in international relations and environmental studies, Kim has also done additional course work in the College of Engineering. She lived and worked in Chiba, Japan, for five years, where she organized an alumni affiliate with WAA. She speaks Japanese and French, and has traveled throughout Asia and Europe extensively.

As an undergraduate, Kim was the coxswain for the UW women's varsity eight-crew team as an undergraduate and went on to become a two-time member of the U.S. Olympic Team, competing in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea, and the 1992 games in Barcelona, Spain. Kim's international athletic experiences have given her the opportunity to travel, live and compete in many countries, and build a network of contacts around the world.

Sarah joined WAA in 2001 as part of a partnership with the Division of Continuing Studies to lead the Wisconsin Alumni Lifelong Learning initiative. In concert with Continuing Studies and other university and community partners, Sarah oversees the development and implementation of a wide variety of alumni learning opportunities locally, across the country and online.

Prior to coming to WAA, Sarah worked for the UW-Madison School of Education, and spent nearly ten years in university residential life on three different campuses. Though she's not a UW grad, Sarah feels like one because of her husband's Badger-filled family, and her many years spent working on campus. She and her husband, Don '83, spend their free time keeping up with the constant activity of their two boys and two Labs.

Susan joined the WAA staff in October 2007 as the organization’s first director of business development. Her work focuses on identifying and developing new revenue opportunities for WAA by building relationships with local and national partners. She was previously business development coordinator for a large Madison insurance firm and also worked in sales, marketing and news for radio broadcasting companies in Wisconsin and Illinois.

Born and raised in Genoa City, Wisconsin, Susan became a Badger during her high school years at Lake Geneva Badger High School. She and her husband Tom enjoy living near campus with their two boys, Dane and Austin.

Dennis has been WAA's printing specialist for more than 10 years. His many years of printing experience both with WAA and Auto Glass Specialists has enabled the association to maintain and expand its ever-growing printing facility. All facets of printing — from black-and-white brochures to four-color dinner programs and special invitations — are produced at WAA under the watchful eye of Dennis. In his free time, Dennis and his wife, Belinda, enjoy rollerblading, biking and spending time with their two adult children. Dennis is also an avid gardener.

Liz's background in education and travel is enhanced by her ability to speak German, French and some Spanish, which helps with the other part of her job: assisting Travel Director Sheri Hicks. Liz is proud to be a Badger and loves working with the worldwide family of Badgers.

Jeff is responsible for leading the organization's regional and campus-based outreach efforts to alumni, students and parents, including university advocacy, diversity and a worldwide network of alumni chapters and affiliate groups. Jeff also oversees the association's student-relations efforts, international travel programs, alumni lifelong learning and school and college programs.

A 1982 UW-Madison graduate of business administration with a double major in marketing, finance, investment and banking, Jeff came to WAA in 1989 from the UW Office of Student Financial Services. He served six years as director of alumni chapters at WAA before being promoted to a senior-level administrator. As a seasoned veteran with UW-Madison, Jeff has cultivated and maintained many valuable connections and developed strong alliances on campus, in the Madison community and around the world.

Outside of work, Jeff serves on the board of Edgewood High School, is treasurer of the UW Alumni Band (he plays the tuba), and is active in his church and neighborhood association. Jeff and his wife, Cathy '82, also a graduate of the business school, are parents of two boys, Eric and John.

Copywriting and Copyediting Specialist

Ben joined the WAA team in March 2006, shortly after earning an English degree from the UW. Ben's role includes writing and editing marketing and communications pieces as well as writing for On Wisconsin and Badger Insider magazines. In addition to his writing responsibilities, Ben also serves as the marketing manager for WAA's affiliate groups, such as the Greek Alumni Council and Brittingham Viking Organization.
