Frontline: A Report on Parkinson's Disease — Madison
The Wisconsin Alumni Association and Wisconsin Public Television sponsored a special preview and discussion of a PBS Frontline documentary with producer David Iverson and University of Wisconsin-Madison professor Clive Svendsen. The event was held at the Fluno Center in Madison on November 11, 2008.
Frontline: A Report on Parkinson's Disease is a story that combines longstanding medical mysteries, remarkable scientific breakthroughs, ethical dilemmas and political debate. It is a story that poses important questions that can spark a dialog about issues of growing significance for science and for society. Parkinson's disease is a condition that may eventually be controlled by advances developed through embryonic stem cell research, providing breakthrough insights into other brain disorders.

About the Featured Speakers
David Iverson has been an executive producer and anchor of national, regional and local specials for public broadcasting for 30 years. He was based in Wisconsin for 20 years, hosting weekly programs and specials for Wisconsin Public Television, including the Midwest Emmy award-winning WeekEnd and We the People. He is currently co-producing, writing and reporting a documentary on Parkinson's disease for the PBS series Frontline airing next season. Iverson lives and works in San Francisco.
Dr. Clive Svendsen is professor of neurology and anatomy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is director of the NIH funded Stem Cell Training Program and co-director of the Wisconsin Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Program. Dr. Svendsen is developing translational stem cell and gene therapies to treat diseases such as Parkinson's, Huntigton's and ALS. Dr. Svendsen was interviewed for the Frontline project.
