Be Sun Smart…

Tag: Studio Events, BusinessLori Grice @ 11:18 pm

DSCN4455 Don’t miss Dr. Deo Klein’s FREE skin cancer screening this Saturday, May 17th from 9am - 2pm.    Call 912.489.3700 to reserve your time.  Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month is sponsored by the American Academy of Dermatology and Statesboro Dermatology.  Statesboro Dermatology is located at 1161 Sarahlyn Lane, Suite A (across from Mill Creek Park).  Just think, you could get your screening done, then spend a fun day across the street at Splash in the ‘Boro WITH sunscreen!   Dr. Klein’s granddaughters are two of my favorite little girls to photograph.  Mom and dad are not to bad to work with either.  So take some time this Saturday to get that spot checked out you have been worrying about!0042  In addition to being a great friend and client - Dr. Klien has been our dermatologist for years.  We simply did not understand the value of sunscreen when we were younger and now we are all paying for it.

Hope to see you Saturday!

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!!

Tag: PersonalLori Grice @ 7:53 pm

DSCN4957 Being a Mom is such a big job, but it seems like the little things are what are important!  My friend Liz told me a story this week about a CRAZY morning she was having with her three kids.  She said that in the middle of it she just started laughing out loud.  Her husband asked what she was laughing about.  She said…”These are the moments I want to remember and savor forever”.

May your Mother’s Day be the BEST one you have ever had!  Take time to think about the things you want to remember forever.  Better yet, make today the day you start a journal for your kids by writing some of your favorite memories down.  You don’t have to do it every day, or even every week - but when you do sit down and read what you wrote it is amazing how those moments are captured in your heart forever.

I received this via email this week and wanted to share it with you…

Before I was a Mom,

I never tripped over toys

or forgot words to a lullaby.

I didn’t worry whether or not

my plants were poisonous.

I never thought about immunizations.

Before I was a Mom,

I had never been puked on.

Pooped on.

Chewed on.

Peed on.

I had complete control of my mind

and my thoughts.

I slept all night.

Before I was a Mom,

I never held down a screaming child

so doctors could do tests.

Or give shots.

I never looked into teary eyes and cried.

I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin.

I never sat up late hours at night

watching a baby sleep.

Before I was a Mom,

I never held a sleeping baby just because

I didn’t want to put her down.

I never felt my heart break into a million pieces

when I couldn’t stop the hurt.

I never knew that something so small

could affect my life so much.

I never knew that I could love someone so much.

I never knew I would love being a Mom.

Before I was a Mom,

I didn’t know the feeling of

having my heart outside my body.

I didn’t know how special it could feel

to feed a hungry baby.

I didn’t know that bond

between a mother and her child.

I didn’t know that something so small

could make me feel so important and happy.

Before I was a Mom,

I had never gotten up in the middle of the night

every 10 minutes to make sure all was okay.

I had never known the warmth,

the joy,

the love,

the heartache,

the wonderment

or the satisfaction of being a Mom.

I didn’t know I was capable of feeling so much,

before I was a Mom.

Send this to someone who you think is a special Mom.

…and this concludes "Party Week"

Tag: Edie GraceLori Grice @ 9:48 pm

IMG_5718RG Edie Grace’s 7th birthday party week has been a blast!  We kicked it off last Saturday with a family party, went to Savannah on her actual birthday on Wednesday, and ended it with a party of friends.  (for the first time we let HER create the guest list)  The friend party was held at “Mommies’ Mommies”(my mom’s) house here in Statesboro.  Her guest list included friends from just about all of her life experiences to date:  daycare to dance…family life center to Pinewood to church — she invited a few from each it seems.

Her party included swimming, fingernail and toenail painting, limbo, banana split making, playhouse playing and swinging and bouncing on the play set the Easter Bunny dropped off in March.

We have had a great week.  On Wednesday, she picked out her new “big girl” bike that she can ride without training wheels.  Of course, she picked the High School Musical with a picture of Troy Bolton on it.  I think all of our parents are trying to make up for all the things they were not able to do for us.  It is tuff to keep Edie Grace grounded in reality.  Thank goodness birthday’s come only once per year!IMG_5506RG IMG_5528RG

Free Spirit Pottery & Glass…

Today I found out that Mrs. Ann is offering “Kids Art Classes” every Wednesday afternoon from 3:30pm - 5:00pm.  Next Wednesday they are going to do a wet clay project.  The class is only $15 per child and includes all the supplies!  Edie Grace has already told me that when she gets old enough she is going to work at Free Spirit.  She LOVES that place!!!

Many of you may not know that Free Spirit no longer charges studio hours.  (used to be $6/hour plus the piece of your choice to paint)  Now all you have to pay for is the ceramic piece or pieces.  How cool is that??!!?  Mrs. Ann told me that she now has people spending afternoons there just painting and relaxing.  (note…if you can’t find me at the studio I just might be two doors down…just kidding)  I really do enjoy painting as much as Edie Grace does.  Maybe you all can come join us this summer for some ART Free Spirit style !!!

The images are of  Mrs. Ann’s granddaughter.  Isn’t she beautiful?  She and Edie Grace like to hang out together when she is in town.IMG_8883

Happy SEVENTH Birthday Edie Grace

Tag: Baby's First Year, Your Portrait, Your Story, Edie GraceLori Grice @ 8:26 am

IMG_2055 Seven years ago today- mine and DeWayne’s world turned upside down and inside out.  God gave us the most incredibly precious gift any one could ever ask for - a terrific & beautiful little girl.  After a 12 year journey, with lots of ups and downs - she arrived.  Many of you had told me that there was no way that I could understand love until I experienced parenthood.  Nothing has ever been more true.  Edie Grace has become our world.  She has been my creative rebirth in so many ways.

Most of you know  our story - but after a 12 year struggle to have a child - I learned when she was only 14 months old that I had cervical cancer.  In fact, I had my first surgery on my 33rd birthday.  I breast fed Edie Grace for the last time the night prior to my surgery.

This was an epiphany to me, however.  If I did not make it through the surgery or survive the cancer - I realized that the ONLY way Edie Grace would know me was through pictures.  She would have no cognitive memory other than pictures.

How ironic - the gift I give to parents every day - is the ONLY way my child would know me - had I not survived.  Well God had another plan for me.  He knew that many of you needed to hear my story and to have your story told through the lens of my camera.  Every portrait I create is special - but none are more special than the ones I have created since this spiritual and creative rebirth.  I understand the incredible importance of my job in a way I had never understood before the arrival of Edie Grace and the survivorship of cancer.

When I speak around the country - sharing my story I end my speech with a slide show.  It is our story through pictures and it is set to one of my favorite songs by Tim Mcgraw “Live Like You Were Dying” which is my challenge to each of you.  Life really takes on a whole new meaning when you do this.

Get the Flash Player to see the wordTube Media Player.

Happy Birthday Edie Grace and thanks for adding the value and meaning to my life that it needed.  You have inspired me to work harder and stretch my creative abilities in ways that seemed unimaginable.  All that in just SEVEN years!

I Love you!

Mom

p.s.  You are soooooo beautiful!!!

Edie Grace’s birthday week begins today!

Tag: Edie GraceLori Grice @ 10:33 pm

FSCN5040 Over and over - again and again you have told me how fast childhood goes by - but I still can not believe that on Wednesday, May 7th Edie Grace will be SEVEN.  Oh my it is going WAY TO FAST!  Can someone PLEASE slow this down?  So our first birthday event was tonight at the farm.  Edie Grace loves going to the farm.  DeWayne’s parents have build a beautiful log cabin by hand.  It is a great place to escape with cousins (Mackenzie and Brooke).  Edie Grace is practicing her driving skills on Papa Bob’s mule. Of course there was more food than a hundred people could possibly eat.  The multi layer - made from scratch - red velvet cake made by Memaw Betty is always my favorite.  For some reason, I can not find it listed in the appoved foods Weight Watchers guide.

Before heading to the farm - we went to namesake grandmother Grace’s birthday event.  Tomorrow we will head to Believer’s 7th birthday celebration.  Yes - our church and Edie Grace share the same birthday.  Then Sunday afternoon to cousin Olivia’s third birthday at Gankie Rick’s.

It is going to be a busy week!  I am going to try to shoot a few sessions and maybe work in a few of my other real job things this week - in between the birthday week celebrations.DSCN5031 DSCN5015
