Don’t Worry, Be Happy

A new study by UW professor Jack Nitschke shows that the emotional centers in the brain respond much more strongly when the event is preceded by uncertainty. “If we can reduce people’s feelings of uncertainty,” Nitschke says, “we can reduce their anxiety and their response to bad experiences.”

Will a Warmer Lake Doom Invasive Fish?

UW researchers hope to experimentally warm a Wisconsin lake in an effort to selectively wipe out unwanted smelt. The innovative experiment involves a device known as a GELI, which brings water from the bottom of a lake to the surface to raise the temperature of the deeper water.

The Badger Career Network’s improved suite of online tools now includes Job Alerts, a new service that connects mid-career and executive-level alumni with employers. Alumni who sign up for the Badger Career Network also get access to a virtual career center; BuckyNet, the university’s online job board; a monthly e-newsletter; and invitations to career related events and teleclasses.
