Long story, but I’ve been in e-mail contact with a guy I used to work with — “back in the day” — at the Daily Cardinal. He has a daughter who will start college next year, and he shared a poem that he’s been working on about a dad watching his daughter grow up and prepare to leave.
Well, I was fine through most of it, but by the end, I have to admit that a few tears slipped out of my eyes — right here in the office.
After reading it, I responded, “You’ve hit it right: somehow we seem to think that we have all the time in the world when they’re growing up, and then they’re gone. It’s been very nice to have our son here in town, though — that helps — and I’m trying to ‘go within’ to figure out what I want the next phase of my life to be about once our daughter is gone (she’s a sophomore in high school). Life won’t be the same, but it can be good if we do it right.”
I think this is enough emotional stuff for one day. How ’bout those Bears?
