So Sean and I were going to “spend the day” together today. I’ve heard of other parents taking off of work this week, or setting aside days when they and their spring-break children can have some time together.
Well, mine ran this way: he was asleep when I got back from running Claire to school and taking Ginger to the vet. Then I felt like I’d been hit by an honest-to-goodness truck. So, I lay down for a little nap while waiting for Sean to wake up and shower. Well, fast forward to 11:40 or so, and you find us both awake and Sean showered, but still in his bathrobe. That’s how the “day” became an afternoon, but it was still fine.
We had lunch out and chatted about this and that — nothing too heavy. (I don’t want to bombard the kid with weighty life issues all the time, after all.) Then I took him shopping for jeans, which really did take the rest of the afternoon before it was time to go pick up Claire — plus a stop at Dairy Queen for good measure.
Then I had to run off, and he was the one to fall asleep for the next several hours. Now he’s watching Scrubs with Alex and Claire.
It’s like it’s supposed to be, I guess: he’s had get-togethers with friends on most days, and he will again tomorrow. He goes to the SERF to exercise; he works on homework; and he spends some time with us. Alex and I both have things we need to do, too — work, errands, appointments — and Claire is in school. So, while it’s great to have Sean here, it’s really a very ordinary kind of time — no rolling of red carpets or trumpeting of horns.
And I’m just fine with that.
