The other day I had lunch with my friend Diane, who has two daughters: one, like Sean, is a college freshman, and the other, like Claire, is a high school sophomore. We’ve known each other for quite a few years now, and we’ve watched our children go from elementary-schoolers to middle-schoolers to high-schoolers and now beyond.
We were talking about how we now have the chance — with our younger ones going off to college in not so long — to re-evaluate everything about our lives. We have the opportunity to choose to remain married (we both do! — but you have to consider that as a stepping-off point), to sell our houses, to remain in Madison or go elsewhere in the country or world, to travel, to change careers, to downsize in small or enormous ways.
This really is a whole new second life that we will soon embark upon, and it’s a good time right now to start thinking about what our next lives hold. What does the next big picture have in store for all of us?
