Anticipation

Sean will to go to see Claire’s play again tomorrow, and then we’ll take him home for the spring-break week. For him, there will be no driving off to party in warmer climes, no service-learning adventures, and, in fact, no big plans at all. Just some advance work on a music-theory paper, some time with friends, some time with us, and probably lots of sleeping.
Alex just told me that he plans to be home for the week next week as well — he won’t go jetting off to his out-of-state job. I will be working, and Claire will be in school, but I think it will feel like a vacation for all of us — a tiny bit like those “staycations” that have become the new buzzword, except that we’ll be working!
It will still be different, though — two people who are not normally in the house will be in the house, and I plan to work at home one day, too. (The state high school basketball tournament will be going on at the Kohl Center, and parking on campus is virtually nonexistent for two days. It’s better for one’s blood pressure just to work from home.)
I have no grand illusions about familial bliss during the week to come. I hope only for some more of the down time that I’ve tasted lately — and the chance to share it with these three very important people in my life.

| 1. March 16 2009 09:03 AM | I have not started reading your blog yet. Just read about it in the Alumni magazine yesterday! It has been 7 years since I sent my first-born off to UW and 5 years since I sent my second-born (they both graduated!) and guess what, I am still grieving in a way. I loved the 18 years they spent at home and I still miss the day to day activity that having your children around brings. My kids are both married now to wonderful people and my oldest is having a baby. I told my husband the other day that I still feel the effects of the empty nest! I did enjoy my children's college days and I do enjoy them now, but it's not the same. Just thought I'd share. Now I'll start reading! :) --Posted by Marsha Mood | |
