Alex and I were able to connect briefly with Sean on Saturday night when we saw him at a faculty concert on campus. We had a quick hello before the concert, but decided to stay put in our seats during intermission so as to not infringe on his evening — especially when we saw, across the crowded concert hall, that he had come with a friend.
But, at intermission, Sean came over to talk and seemed genuinely glad to see us. He hadn’t seen Alex in two weeks because Alex had been away at his out-of-state job and had missed the second-semester move-in, complete with piano lugging. Sean asked if we’d take him out for some dinner afterward, and even though we’d already eaten, who would turn down that request?
We met up after the concert, said hello to one of Sean’s friends whom we’ve already met, and met the one he’d come with. Then off we went into the VERY cold night to have some Culver’s. (Nothing like comfort food, eh?)
Alex and I caught up on Sean’s new, second-semester classes, and Sean got caught up on Alex’s job. It was very good to see him, but I felt a little sad because I think I detected a bit of homesickness…?
In an e-mail that Sean had sent before we saw him, but I didn’t see until later, I think my intuition was perhaps confirmed. He’d written, “I’ve really missed you all, especially Dad.” Awww… I love that kid.
