A Message from WAA
WAA offers student loan consolidation services to UW-Madison graduates through Nelnet. This company was chosen several years ago after reviewing proposals against established criteria to ensure we work with only the best affinity partners to offer programs and services of good value to our alumni.
We have been carefully watching and will continue to monitor New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's investigation into student lending and note that there are several points of differentiation between our affiliation with Nelnet and the issues raised by Mr. Cuomo's investigation:
(1) Our student loan consolidation program is marketed to alumni, not to current students.
(2) All financial remuneration to WAA from Nelnet comes into the organization, not to an individual staff member as has been reported at some institutions or associations.
(3) WAA's status as an independent, nonprofit organization, rather than an office or department of a public university.
Of our various affinity partners, Nelnet is at the top of the list in terms of its professionalism, the feedback we have received from alumni utilizing this program, and their responsiveness and communication with us. These affinity partnerships, including credit cards, insurance and travel programs, provide WAA and hundreds of other nonprofit alumni associations nationwide with vital funding that supports programs and services.
