Reed Hall '70
Hall is the executive director of the Marshfield Clinic, one of the largest private, multi-specialty group medical care practices in the United States. He earned his UW bachelor’s degree in American Institutions.
As chair of the WAA board, Hall partners with WAA’s executive leadership and staff to drive the organization’s strategic thinking and direction. His term runs from July 2008 to June 2009.
WAA: How long have you been involved in UW alumni activities?
Hall: Quite a long time, actually. I live in Marshfield, Wisconsin, and locally, I’ve been working with the chapter for over 25 years. This is my second time around on the Board of Directors. I was on from July 1997 until the end of June 2002. I joined again in July 2004.
WAA: The term as chair lasts just one year. What are your goals for 2008-09?
Hall: I think, first, we have to develop a good working relationship with the new chancellor, Carolyn “Biddy” Martin PhD’85. She came in and met with members of the WAA Executive Committee of the Board of Directors. I think she’s a great choice for the university. Because of the good relationship that WAA has with the Chancellor’s office, the association has been able to expand its alumni and student programming. In addition, it will be important for us to continue working well with the entire university, as well as with the UW Foundation, the Athletic Department and the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation.
WAA: Are there other important issues facing WAA?
Hall: We’re already planning for WAA’s 150th anniversary, which will be celebrated in 2011. It’s a good opportunity for us to reinforce to the state and elsewhere the importance of the university and its alumni. Plus, I think we’ve got an opportunity to make a lasting gift to the university and the state.
Also, 2009 will be a re-accreditation year for the UW. That’s a big project, and it’s important not only to the university and its faculty and students, but also to alumni. It affects the value of our degrees. We at WAA will help in every way we can and will communicate to our alumni about the importance of this process.
WAA: You’re the executive director for the Marshfield Clinic, and you volunteer your time as chair of the WAA Board of Directors. I imagine it’s a lot of work — why did you decide to take it on?
Hall: My wife and I are both grads, as are all three of our children. In all, five generations of our families have attended the UW. Volunteering for the board is an opportunity to give back to the university that’s been so very, very good to us.
