San Francisco, CA, April 18, 2009
A stowaway was found among the group of swimmers from Phoenix, AZ who “escaped” from Alcatraz and swam the 1.5 miles across cold 51 degree, choppy San Francisco Bay to the safety of the beach at Aquatic Park. Reaching shore after the challenging swim in just 36 minutes, 12-year-old Brock Christy reached into his wetsuit and pulled out Flat Bucky. (looks like our Flat Bucky!!!)
Brock, the old English name for Badger, is the son of Lindsey Christy (CALS 2001), grandson of Thomas Christy (Business, 1970). As if this Saturday’s swim was not enough of an accomplishment for Flat Bucky, the next morning he was found boarding the boat taking the swimmers to the Golden Gate bridge where he and Brock jumped off and swam the 1 mile shore to shore again in the choppy cold waters under the bridge.
