Answer: Chuck, there's no need to worry. ILS did disappear.
The Department of Integrated Liberal Studies (ILS) was established in 1948, and it is one of the oldest continuous interdisciplinary programs in the United States. ILS enrollment was at its peak in 1965. However, interest declined soon after, and in 1979 the dean of the College of Letters and Science attempted to eliminate the program. Luckily, the faculty rebelled, and ILS was reinstated.
Today the ILS department discusses topics such as Western history, philosophy, politics, art and literature. It offers courses entitled Science, Technology and Philosophy, Literature and the Arts and Political, Economic and Social Thought. ILS is now a flourishing program with approximately 2,000 students enrolled. If you would like to know more about the history of ILS or what its like today, you can visit
