MADISON, Wis. -- University of Wisconsin-Madison alumni in Milwaukee will celebrate the founding of the university with a talk from experts on breweries on Saturday, May 3.
UW-Madison associate professor Robin Shepard will present his lecture, "The Search for the Perfect Pint" at the Wisconsin Alumni Association: Milwaukee Chapter Founders' Day event. He will be joined by Dr. David Ryder, brewmaster at Miller Brewing Company, whose talk is titled "Myth and Magic of Beer through the Ages."
The Founders' Day event will start at 7 p.m. at the Bavarian Inn, 700 West Lexington Boulevard, in Glendale. News media are welcome to attend. For more details, visit

Shepard received his PhD in land resources from the UW's Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies in 1993. He is an associate professor of life sciences communication and the state program leader for community, natural resources and economic development. He is the author of two books about the best breweries in Wisconsin and Illinois.
The Milwaukee Chapter will also recognize Mike Jones, who graduated from UW-Madison in 1981 with degrees in history and philosophy, as a Milwaukee Distinguished Alumni Award winner and as the 2008 Badger of the Year. Jones is senior vice president, general counsel and secretary for Miller Brewing Company. Badger of the Year award recipients are alumni who live in Wisconsin and are making a difference as business or community leaders, volunteers, educators, philanthropists or UW-Madison advocates.
Founders' Day 2008 is presented in cities nationwide by the
Wisconsin Alumni Association, a nonprofit organization, in cooperation with the
University of Wisconsin Foundation.
These events are hosted annually by UW-Madison alumni chapters to bring the latest in
University of Wisconsin research to alumni in their hometowns, raise funds for student scholarships and celebrate the founding of the university. Proceeds from the Wisconsin Alumni Association: Milwaukee Chapter Founders' Day event will benefit the chapter's local scholarship fund.
Participation and membership in the Wisconsin Alumni Association and its chapters are open to all alumni, students and friends of UW-Madison.
