The Posse Program, featured in the current issue of On Wisconsin, is just one of several current efforts to increase the diversity of UW-Madison's student body. There are also increases in grants and fellowships, as well as expansion of efforts to improve campus climate — that is, to make students of color feel safer and more welcome in Madison.
And there are other major programs as well — most notably PEOPLE, the Pre-College Enrichment Opportunity Program for Learning Excellence. Where Posse focuses on out-of-state students, PEOPLE places its emphasis on recruiting and preparing students of color from Madison, Milwaukee, Waukesha, and Racine, as well as from the Ho-Chunk and Menominee Nations.
The program begins when students are in middle school, and it emphasizes enrichment in math, science, and writing. It's currently serving some eight hundred students.
