From UW to UK
Translating UW research papers into other languages for export overseas is nothing new. But it now seems that some UW journals even need to be translated into English.
Parenting the First Year, a monthly newsletter offering child-rearing advice in an age-specific format, has become a big hit with British parents. Produced by the School of Human Ecology and authored by child development specialists David Riley, Dori Schatell '83, MS'86, and UW-Extension Specialist Susan Nitzke '68, MS'73, PhD'86, the publication is translated into British English by pediatrician Tony Waterston and health journalist Heather Welford.

"The British evaluation report [of the newsletter] is fun to read," says Riley. "British parents report our newsletter is 'dead lovely' and 'bang on.'"
While an American dad might change his fussy baby's diapers before a ride in a stroller and keep a pacifier handy, a British mom would change her baby's nappies before a walk in a pushchair, keeping a dummy nearby. And that's not a comment on her spouse.
