In the Fall 2002 issue of On Wisconsin, you'll find something we editors are truly excited about. It's not the cover story on young farmers, though that's a nice article. Nor is it the informative piece on building a better mosquito, though that, too, is a good read. It isn't any article in particular, or a photo or letter or drawing or even an ad.
It's all those new sections - Research, Arts and Culture, Classroom, Sports, Scene - all those short pieces that we used to lump together in a big mass and call Dispatches. Through a tremendous effort spearheaded by our senior editor, Mike Penn MA'97, and by designer Eric Schueffner, we've redesigned the front and back of the magazine and lengthened the whole publication by eight pages.
If you want to excite an editor, use the word "redesign."
If you want to terrify an editor, use the word "lengthen."
The immediate result is that we had a lot of work on our hands this time around. The secondary result is that we now have more of everything. We've got more short articles, we've got more space for features, and we've even got more alumni news. And each of the new sections is set off with its own icon and signature color to help establish its identity.
So take a look at the new On Wisconsin. Enjoy the moreness of it all.
