Get an in-depth look at Wisconsin’s natural and cultural landscapes, in the company of a UW-Madison expert. From our distinctive red barns to our golden prairies and crystal lakes, Wisconsin has a unique landscape to explore. In this six-week online course, you’ll learn about:
A sense of place. Discover the history of Wisconsin’s diverse landscapes, and gain insights about how cultural influences shaped the Badger State as we know it.
A natural resource. This exclusive online course was developed by UW-Madison expert William H. Tishler, an emeritus professor of landscape architecture. His lectures provide the foundation for the course, and he’ll also be online to answer your questions.
A sustainable design. Today’s landscape architects think about planning and preservation for generations yet to come. Lectures in this course will shed light on our state’s geological and cultural past, and take a look at what the future holds for sustaining a unique sense of place.

About the Instructor
A native of Wisconsin’s beautiful Door County, William H. Tishler earned his bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture at UW-Madison and completed graduate work at Harvard University. Now an emeritus professor of landscape architecture at UW-Madison, Tishler has lectured widely throughout his career, and his professional achievements include numerous awards, including several honors from the American Society of Landscape Architects. An author of several books, Tishler recently published Door County’s Emerald Treasure: A History of Peninsula State Park.
How the Course Works:
Each Tuesday and Thursday from June 16 to July 25, 2008, a new lecture will be posted on the class Web site. Online course material will be in audio or video format, with some accompanying slide shows. You can view the lectures at any time that's convenient for you.
As a class participant, you can post comments and questions on an exclusive class message board. UW faculty facilitators will share their perspectives.
