Here we are, coming to the end of another year. At Badger Voice though, we see it as a new beginning (we're "glass is half full" kind of Badgers). With new opportunities to share UW spirit with alumni, it's hard not to get excited. You'll just need to wait until February to do so with us. We're taking the month of January off (we're also Badgers in need of "a long winter's nap"). Until then, enjoy this merry issue. Season's Greetings, Happy New Year and U-Rah-Rah Wisconsin!
With 2013 nearly in the books, let's reflect on the best Badger moments of the year. It was a time of new faces (Chancellor Blank, Coach Andersen) and campus spaces (Alumni Pier). It was one full of historic milestones and grand achievements. And through it all, not a day went by where alumni weren't reminded of how special it is to be a Badger.
What does the study of beer have in common with Shakespeare? How about 50 years of alumni travel and the building of a pier? Those are just a few of the programs, events and alumni initiatives that took place in what has turned out to be a landmark year for the Wisconsin Alumni Association. And as is tradition at this time of year, we present a year-end list of Badger-focused highlights you'll definitely want to check twice!
To cap off Gary Andersen's first season as Wisconsin's head football coach, the 19th ranked Badgers are set to take on No. 9 South Carolina in the Capital One Bowl on January 1, 2014. It'll be the first meeting between these teams, though Wisconsin holds a 2-0 record in the Capital One Bowl. But only the Official Badger Bowl Tour can guarantee a winning time ... regardless of the final score.
Donald Downs, a UW-Madison professor of political science, was preparing for a class recently when he got an unexpected call. Downs was asked to deliver the charge to graduates at the Winter Commencement ceremony on Sunday, Dec. 22. "It's a genuine honor and a definite surprise," says Downs, whose UW career spans 29 years.
