Another Barrier Broken: One Badger’s Journey from Wisconsin to Washington

How does a Midwesterner become the first female Speaker of the House in Washington State? What inspired her to shift from a business degree to legal work to public health and beyond? Learn about Laurie Jinkins’s long journey as she’s broken down barriers and fought to protect the vulnerable throughout her life.

About the Speaker

Laurie Jinkins ’85, MA’87 made history twice on January 13, 2020, when she became the first female and first openly lesbian Speaker of the House for Washington State. She represents the 27th legislative district in Pierce County. Jinkins began her career litigating child abuse and neglect cases for the Washington State Attorney General’s Office. She then shifted her career toward public health, serving first as an assistant secretary of health at the Washington State Department of Health and now as senior adviser at the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department. She has also been active in advancing Washington State’s antidiscrimination laws both prior to and during her time in the House. Prior to becoming Speaker, Laurie served on the House Appropriations and Health Care and Wellness committees. She has also chaired the Civil Rights and Judiciary Committee. Jinkins and her wife live in Tacoma where they raised their son.
