“Making Russia Great Again: Vladimir Putin and the Uses of History”
By David McDonald, associate chair of the UW–Madison history department and the Alice D. Mortenson/Petrovich Distinguished Chair in Russian History
This talk seeks to give the audience two takeaways: insight into how the emerging political order in the Russian Federation makes sense to its leaders and a large number of its citizens; and how this is due, in turn, to deeper-lying historical legacies, supplemented by the Putin administration’s interpretation of Russia’s Communist and imperial pasts in offering a vision for the country’s present and future.
