Brenda Velasco JBA ’96 was one of 154 teachers chosen nationwide to attend the 2016 Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy in Jersey City, NJ this summer. There were over 1500 applicants for the all expenses paid academy. The program was founded by PGA Star Phil Mickelson and his wife Amy to help selected teachers increase their professional development in math and science. The Mickelson’s teamed up with ExxonMobil, Math Solutions, and the National Science Teacher Association to organized this week long academy. Teachers in this prestigious program had the opportunity to learn fun, hands-on projects from some the best math and science coaches in the nation. They also met Phil and Amy Mickelson, and had time to explore NYC. Brenda Velasco was one of two teachers selected from South Dakota where she teaches third grade in Rapid City. “It was the BEST professional development opportunity of my teaching career.”
